Albert Frey - Desert Architect is a documentary film that sheds light on the remarkable life and career of the visionary Swiss/American architect Albert Frey.

Swiss born Albert Frey was one of the most radical architects to emerge from Europe and one of the defining figures of American modernism. Yet his story has rarely been told in his own voice.
Joseph Rosa, Frey's biographer, recorded extensive interviews with Frey for his book "Albert Frey, Architect". These taped interviews have never been heard publicly. Three decades later, the remarkable conversations become the narrative backbone of this film: Albert Frey himself recounts his life, from his early years in Switzerland and Europe, working with Le Corbusier and the European avant-garde, to his arrival in America and his pioneering work in California.
Moving between Paris, New York, Los Angeles and Palm Springs, the film follows the transatlantic journey that shaped Frey's radical architectural vision. His voice is brought into dialogue with contemporary architects, curators, designers and writers who explore the ideas behind his work and his enduring influence.
Rather than looking at Frey solely through the lens of his celebrated Palm Springs houses, the film places him within the larger history of European and American modernism — tracing the connections between the Bauhaus generation, Le Corbusier, the Machine Age and the experimental culture of postwar California. It also examines his love for nature and what made Frey's approach so quietly ahead of its time: his insistence on modest scale, low-cost and readily available materials, and a dissolving of boundaries between inside and outside that turned the desert landscape itself into architecture. Working without air conditioning, he developed ingenious passive strategies to meet the extremes of the desert climate — solutions rooted in observation, economy and invention that feel urgently relevant in an era of energy scarcity and ecological rethinking.

At its heart, Albert Frey is an encounter with an architect who spent his life looking toward the future. Through the rediscovered recordings, Frey becomes not simply the subject of a documentary, but its narrator; telling his own extraordinary story in his own words.
